Nestled between the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea, just 240 km off the coast of Somalia, and 400 km from the coast of Yemen, Socotra Island is one of the most magical and untouched places on Earth. This tiny Yemeni island feels like it belongs to another world, with its surreal landscapes, unique wildlife, and warm Socotri culture. Whether it’s the iconic Dragon Blood Trees, pristine beaches, or hidden lagoons, every corner of Socotra offers something extraordinary to discover. If you’re dreaming of an adventure far from the beaten path, this island has it all—otherworldly beauty, unspoiled nature, and a sense of tranquility like nowhere else. In this post, I’ll take you through the 12 most beautiful places to see on the islands.
ARHER BEACH
Located on the northeast shores of Socotra Island, Arher Beach is one of the most iconic places in Socotra and one of the most beautiful beaches in the world! And it was definitely the place I was most excited to see before my trip!

The beach itself is pretty gorgeous, with endless white sand meeting beautiful turquoise water, but the most impressive are the incredible white dunes, cascading down from rugged cliffs and onto the sea.
One of the most beautiful things to do in Arher Beach is to climb up one of the dunes before dawn, and enjoy the sunrise over the ocean! The sand is very soft, so the climb up the dune is pretty hard (count for at least 30 minutes) but the view from the top is an incredible reward!!!

The sun goes down behind the mountains quite early on so if you fancy catching the sunset, head to the eastern point of the island, where the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean meet! Don’t miss the giant whale bones that are spread out on the beach and used to create sculptures.

HOQ CAVE
A short drive away from Arher Beach lies the impressive Hoq Cave. Stretching 3 to 4 kilometers into the limestone cliffs, the cave features impressive stalactites, stalagmites, and large pools of water. The journey to the cave’s entrance involves a 1 hour, fairly steep, hike from Terbak Village. It can be quite challenging when the sun is up, so I recommend starting your journey to the Hoq Cave early morning.
At the top of the hill, the panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and the sea are stunning! Inside the cave, the path is mostly marked, but it is essential to bring a flashlight and to have a local guide walking you through!
Beyond its natural beauty, Hoq Cave holds significant archaeological importance, housing inscriptions and drawings from ancient sailors and traders who visited Socotra Island between the 1st century BC and the 6th century AD. These historical artifacts provide amazing insights into the island’s role as a hub in ancient maritime trade routes.

HOMHIL
The Homhil plateau in Socotra is a magical landscape known for its beautiful flora of Dragon’s Blood Trees, Bottle Trees, Frankincense Trees, and Maryah. It somewhat reminded me of Tanzania!

Beyond the plateau, the most spectacular sight in Homhil is the stunning natural infinity pool, overlooking the sea hundreds of meters down. It is one of the most beautiful places I have seen in Socotra and we were very lucky to be there mostly alone!
To reach the infinity pool we drove to the Homhil Plateau campsite, and then walked down the mostly dried-out canyon for around 30 min. Once we were done, we walked down the hill back to sea level. Alternatively, a lot of visitors hike up from the sea to the infinity pool and back down again! I think the hike up must be pretty strenuous, but at least the infinity pool is the perfect spot to cool off and rest while soaking up some extraordinary views.

KALYSAN CANYON
South East of the island is the stunning Kalysan Canyon, one of the most beautiful places in Socotra Island. After a 1.5 km trek downhill you will reach the bottom of the canyon and discover the first natural pool. What makes Wadi Kalysan particularly beautiful is the sharp contrast between the white limestone walls and the deep emerald colors of the water. Think about the wadis in Oman, but even more stunning! The largest freshwater pool in Socotra, Wadi Kalysan is the perfect place to cliff jump, swim or just lay your towel down and rest in the sun.
The canyon is made of fresh water so in case you have been camping and there was no shower, it is also a great occasion for a refreshing clean up!

ZAHEK SAND DUNES
Arriving in Zahek Sand Dunes, I told myself once more: What is this place?!!!
Located on the South coast of the island, the Zahek Sand Dunes is like a mini desert, with stunning white dunes going all the way to the sea. Sadly we missed the sunset there, but it is probably the best time to visit.

AOMAK BEACH
Just a short drive away, is the stunning Aomak Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Socotra. Aomak Beach is a long stretch of untouched white sand meeting crystal-clear turquoise waters. Located on the island’s southern coast, this beach is as remote as it is gorgeous. The day we visited the water was quite rough, so not ideal for swimming, but perfect for a long walk or simply soaking in the serenity of Socotra’s coast. We made only a very short stop by this beach, which was not even on our itinerary, and I wish we had stayed here the whole day! Definitely a must-visit in Socotra.

DIKSAM PLATEAU
Diksam Plateau is one of many of Socotra’s surreal landscapes. Known for its ancient Dragon Blood Trees, this plateau is one of the island’s most iconic spots. These unique trees are endemic to the island and named after the red resin they produce, which was historically valued for medicine, dye, and incense. Diksam Plateau is also home to deep canyons, rugged cliffs, and stunning panoramic views. The Dragon Blood Trees are ancient survivors, adapted to Socotra’s harsh environment, and found nowhere else in the world, making the Diksam plateau a must-visit in Socotra.

WADI DIRHUR
You might feel like I say this a lot, but Wadi Dirhur was truly one of my favorite places in Socotra!! Once again, it reminded me of the Wadi’s of Oman, but wider, wilder, and more colorful.
Wadi Dirhur is a hidden oasis amidst Socotra’s rugged and arid landscape. Surrounded by towering cliffs and rock formations, this wadi features cool, crystal-clear pools perfect for a refreshing swim. The contrasting scenery—lush green patches against the dry rocky surroundings—makes it a truly unique spot and a great place to unwind, relax, and take in the island’s natural beauty.
The drive up and down the canyon is INSANE, but the local drivers are very used to it! Wadi Dirhur is not a destination in itself, but a stop in between Diksam Plateau and the Firmihin Forest. Yet I highly recommend making a stop there for a couple of hours.

FIRMIHIN FOREST
Firmihin Forest in Socotra is a one-of-a-kind wonder, home to the largest concentration of Dragon Blood Trees on the island. These ancient, otherworldly trees create a truly mystical atmosphere, making it feel as if you have stepped into a fantasy world. It is possible to hike through the forest and up some hills to get some amazing views over the whole forest. The Firmihin Forest is a place like nowhere else on Hearth and an absolute must-see in Socotra.

DETWAH LAGOON
If white sand and a tranquil turquoise sea are your idea of paradise, then welcome to Paradise. This picturesque Detwah lagoon is known for its dazzling turquoise waters and pristine white-sand beaches framed by rugged mountains. The area is rich in marine life, and if you’re lucky, you will spot stingrays gliding through the shallow waters. Detwah Lagoon’s unique sandbars create beautiful patterns that shift with the tides, adding to its magical appeal. It’s the perfect spot for swimming, exploring, or simply relaxing in one of the world’s most untouched landscapes. The Detwah Lagoon truly showcases Socotra’s raw beauty and feels like paradise on Earth!

A common, touristic thing to do while in Detwah Lagoon is to pay a visit to Abdullah, the Cave Man. Abdullah is a local fisherman who lives most of his time in a cave overlooking the beautiful lagoon, and spends his day fishing by hand and cooking for the curious tourists! Thanks to his exposure to tourists, his English is pretty good and he tells the funniest stories!
For sunset, hike up the little peak at the west side of the lagoon and enjoy the incredible views! For dinner, we had fresh lobster we bought from the local kids on the beach that afternoon. Perfection!

SHOAB BEACH
Okay, you are going to think I am messing with you now, but Shoab Beach truly is the most beautiful place in Socotra!
Shoab Beach is a pristine beach accessible only by boat from Qalansiyah. This untouched beach has powdery white sand, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and dramatic cliffs in the background. Take a morning boat ride from Qalansiyah and you are almost certain to spot dozens of dolphins along the way. Once on Shoab Beach, enjoy swimming, snorkeling, or simply soaking in the natural beauty. With no crowds and unspoiled surroundings, Shoab Beach offers is such an incredible experience, highlighting Socotra Island’s stunning and untouched coastline!

HADIBOH
Whether straight off the plane or on your last day before leaving, it is worth spending a few hours in Hadiboh, the capital city of Socotra, to get a glimpse of the Socotran “city life”.
Hadiboh is a lively yet very modest hub showcasing a mix of traditional Socotri culture and rustic infrastructure. It’s not a polished city, but that’s what makes it intriguing. The markets bustle with locals selling fresh produce, fish, and handmade goods, giving an authentic glimpse into daily life. Hadiboh is also the only place on the island with a couple of hotels, so if you can’t handle camping anymore, this is your place to go!

Here you go, these are some of the most beautiful places to visit in Socotra Island! A dream for nature lovers, photographers, and adventurers, I can guarantee you that Socotra is an experience like no other, and should be added to your bucket list ASAP!
