June 21, 2025

Japan is such a dream destination for many, and for good reason! This incredible country offers a unique blend of ancient traditions and cutting-edge modernity, megacities and beautiful nature, and of course incredible food! From the bustling streets of Tokyo to the serene temples of Kyoto and the majestic views of Mount Fuji, an 8-day Japan itinerary can give you a fantastic taste of what this captivating country has to offer.

This 8-day Japan itinerary focuses on giving you a deep dive into Tokyo’s vibrant energy before slowing down in the cultural heart of Kyoto, with a memorable day trip to see Mount Fuji.

8-DAY JAPAN ITINERARY: TOKYO, KYOTO, AND MOUNT FUJI

Day 1: Tokyo – Tsukiji, Ginza, and TeamLab Planets

Start your 8-day Japan itinerary in Tokyo, the bustling capital. Kick off your first morning with an early start at the Tsukiji Outer Market. While the famous wholesale fish market has moved, the outer market still thrives with fresh seafood, local produce, and delicious street food. Grab some fresh sushi or a tamagoyaki (rolled omelet) for breakfast. It’s a fantastic way to experience local flavors. Escape the crowd with a nice stroll through the beautiful Hamarikyu Garden and grab a traditional matcha tea at Nakajima Tea House.

Next, head to Ginza, Tokyo’s upscale shopping district. You’ll find department stores, luxury boutiques, and impressive architecture. Even if you’re not planning to shop, it’s a great area for people-watching and soaking in the sophisticated atmosphere.

End your day with an immersive art experience at TeamLab Planets. This digital art museum offers a truly unique and interactive journey through mesmerizing light installations and sensory environments. Be prepared to take off your shoes and sometimes wade through water – it’s all part of the fun! It’s a visually stunning way to experience Tokyo’s creative side.

Day 2: Tokyo – Meiji Jingu Temple, Harajuku, Shibuya, and Shinjuku

Day 2 of your 8-day Japan itinerary is all about contrasting Tokyo’s traditional and pop culture sides. Begin at Meiji Jingu Temple, a peaceful Shinto shrine dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. The serene forest setting offers a calm escape from the city’s buzz. Walk through the giant torii gate and enjoy the tranquil surroundings.

Just a short walk from the temple is Harajuku, the epicenter of Tokyo’s youth culture and fashion. Explore Takeshita Street for quirky shops, colorful street style, and delicious crepes. It’s a fun, lively area where you can see the latest trends. Be ready to face big crowds though!

From Harajuku, make your way to Shibuya, home to the world-famous Shibuya Crossing, via the cute Cat Street. Experience the organized chaos as hundreds of people cross the intersection simultaneously. Shibuya is also a great neighborhood to shop, from Parco Departement Store to Hands, the largest household goods store in Tokyo, and the local Onitsuka Tiger.

Conclude your day in Shinjuku. Grab dinner in the traditional narrow alley of Omoide Yokocho. Afterward, dive into the neon-lit entertainment district of Kabukicho for a taste of Tokyo’s nightlife, before grabbing a last drink in Golden Gai, the famous compact and historic network of six narrow alleys packed with over 200 tiny, quirky bars.

Day 3: Tokyo – Ueno, Yanaka, and Asakusa

On Day 3, explore Tokyo’s cultural and historical side. Start your day in Ueno Park, a large public park home to several museums, a zoo, and temples. You can visit the Tokyo National Museum, and the National Museum of Western Art, or simply enjoy a relaxing walk. Don’t miss the cute Hanazono Inari Shrine with its beautiful red torii gates.

Next, step back in time in the charming district of Yanaka. This old Tokyo neighborhood survived the Great Kanto Earthquake and World War II, retaining much of its traditional charm. Wander through narrow streets, visit small temples, and explore Yanaka Ginza shopping street for a glimpse of local life.

Finish your day in Asakusa, one of Tokyo’s most historic districts. The highlight here is Senso-ji Temple, Tokyo’s oldest temple. Walk through the vibrant Nakamise-dori market street leading up to the temple, filled with traditional snacks and souvenirs. In the evening, the temple lights up beautifully, offering a magical experience. Finally, head to Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center for a beautiful view of the temple & the Tokyo Skytree from the observation deck.

Day 4: Tokyo – Akihabara and Marunouchi

Day 4 of your 8-day Japan itinerary brings you to two distinct areas of Tokyo. Begin in Akihabara, Tokyo’s electric town and the hub of anime, manga, and gaming culture. Explore multi-story electronics stores, arcade centers, and specialty shops catering to every enthusiast. It’s a sensory overload in the best way possible! You can find unique souvenirs and experience a vibrant subculture Drop some Yens in the claw machines and take some quirky pictures in a purikura, the super fun photobooth.

In the afternoon, shift gears to Marunouchi. This elegant business district stands in stark contrast to Akihabara. It’s home to the Imperial Palace East Garden, where you can stroll through beautiful grounds (the palace itself is not open to the public except on special occasions). The area also boasts modern architecture, high-end restaurants, and lovely tree-lined avenues. It’s a great place for a refined evening walk and dinner.

Day 5: Day Trip to Hakone to see Mount Fuji Views

On Day 5, escape the city for a scenic day trip to Hakone, a pretty mountainous town famous for its hot springs, natural beauty, and incredible views of Mount Fuji. Getting there is easy by train from Tokyo.

Your day in Hakone will likely involve the “Hakone Round Course,” a popular route using various modes of transport. Start with a ride on the Hakone Tozan Railway, a charming mountain train. Then, take the Hakone Ropeway, offering panoramic views of the volcanic landscape of Owakudani and, on clear days, magnificent glimpses of Mount Fuji. At Owakudani, you can even try the local specialty, black eggs, boiled in the sulfurous hot springs.

Next, enjoy a relaxing cruise on Lake Ashi aboard a pirate ship, with Mount Fuji potentially reflecting in the water on a clear day. Visit the iconic red torii gate of Hakone Shrine standing majestically in the lake. Before heading back to Tokyo, consider relaxing in one of Hakone’s famous onsens (hot springs) for a truly authentic Japanese experience. You can also do this while round trip the other way around, strating from Hakone Shrine.

Day 6: Kyoto – Gion, Hōkan-ji Temple, Kiyomizu-Dera & Kodaiji Temples

On Day 6 of your 8-day Japan itinerary, take the Shinkansen (bullet train) to Kyoto, the ancient capital. Immerse yourself in Kyoto’s traditional charm. Start your exploration in Gion, Kyoto’s most famous geisha district. Wander through the beautifully preserved wooden machiya houses, and you might even spot a geiko (Kyoto term for geisha) or maiko (apprentice geisha) if you’re lucky, especially around dusk.

Next, visit Hōkan-ji Temple, also known as Yasaka Pagoda. This five-story pagoda is an iconic landmark of Kyoto and offers fantastic photo opportunities, especially with the surrounding traditional streets.

Continue to Kiyomizu-Dera Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its wooden stage that extends out from the main hall, offering breathtaking views of the city and the surrounding nature. The temple complex is beautiful throughout the year.

End your day at Kodaiji Temple, a serene Zen temple known for its exquisite gardens, and beautiful bamboo grove. It’s a perfect place for a peaceful evening stroll and reflection. The Higashiyama district, where these temples are located, is wonderful to explore on foot.

Day 7: Kyoto – Nijo Castle, Nishiki Market, Sanjo Neighborhood

Day 7 brings you deeper into Kyoto‘s rich history and vibrant daily life. Start your morning at Nijo Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a former residence of the Tokugawa shoguns. Explore the intricate Ninomaru Palace, famous for its “nightingale floors” that chirp to warn of intruders, and admire the beautiful gardens.

For lunch and a truly immersive cultural experience, head to Nishiki Market. This vibrant, narrow covered market stretches over five blocks and offers an incredible array of fresh seafood, local produce, traditional snacks, and unique ingredients. It’s a fantastic place to sample various local delicacies. Remember that eating while walking is generally frowned upon in Japan, so try your samples at the vendor’s stall.

After the market, explore the Sanjo Neighborhood. This area along the Kamo River is known for its shops, restaurants, and quiet atmosphere. You can find everything from modern boutiques to traditional craft stores. Stroll along the riverbank, especially beautiful in the late afternoon, and soak in the city’s charm.

Day 8: Kyoto – Fushimi Inari Taisha & Tofukuji Temple

Conclude your 8-day Japan itinerary with a grand finale in Kyoto. Begin your morning at Fushimi Inari Taisha, a magnificent Shinto shrine famous for its thousands of vibrant orange torii gates that wind up the sacred Mount Inari. It’s an invigorating and visually stunning hike, offering fantastic views and a sense of wonder. I recommend you arrive very early (before 8 am) to avoid the largest crowds.

After descending, head to Tofukuji Temple, particularly renowned for its stunning autumn foliage, but beautiful in all seasons. It boasts a large and impressive Zen garden, and its many sub-temples are a joy to explore. The Tsutenkyo Bridge offers wonderful views of the surrounding valley, especially during fall when the maple trees are ablaze with color.

8 DAYS IN JAPAN – THE BEST TIME TO VISIT

The best time to visit Japan largely depends on what you want to experience. Generally, two peak seasons offer ideal weather and stunning natural beauty:

Spring (March to May): This is the most popular time to visit, thanks to the iconic cherry blossoms (sakura). The blossoms usually peak from late March to early April in major cities like Tokyo and Kyoto, creating a magical atmosphere. Temperatures are mild and pleasant, making it ideal for sightseeing. However, be prepared for larger crowds and higher prices for accommodation and flights during this period.

Autumn (September to November): This is another fantastic time to visit, offering pleasant temperatures and the breathtaking spectacle of autumn leaves (koyo). The vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows of the foliage are stunning, especially in places like Kyoto and Hakone. Crowds are generally thinner than during cherry blossom season, but it’s still a popular time.

Summer (June to August): Japan’s summer can be hot and humid, especially in July and August, with a rainy season usually in June. However, this period is also vibrant with many traditional festivals across the country, offering unique cultural experiences. If you plan to climb Mount Fuji, the official climbing season is typically from early July to early September.

Winter (December to February): While colder, winter in Japan offers unique attractions. You can enjoy winter sports in regions like Hokkaido, see the famous snow monkeys bathing in hot springs, and experience beautiful illuminations and snow festivals. Cities like Tokyo and Kyoto can still be charming, and there are fewer tourists, making for a more relaxed experience.

No matter when you choose to go, Japan offers an incredible journey filled with fascinating culture, delicious food, and stunning sights. This 8-day Japan itinerary is designed to give you a memorable first-time experience, showcasing the best of Tokyo, Kyoto, and the majestic Mount Fuji.
